Marquette Catholic beats Irish

CLINTON — With just 11 players available, Prince of Peace had a tough task on its opening day of the boys soccer team. Marquette Catholic took advantage and recorded a 5-0 victory Tuesday at the Ashford University Soccer Complex.

The win was the second in three outings for the Mohawks.

“I thought we did well for about 80 percent of the game,” Prince of Peace coach Rafael Simmons said. “We are a very young team, with six freshmen, and that showed on some of the mistakes we made today.

“We only had 11 players for the game, which meant no subs, and that had a huge influence at the end of the game. Once my guys started getting tired, we conceded three goals in the last 15-20 minutes. We had three starters out tonight due to spring break.”

The Mohawks scored twice in the final 17 minutes of the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Jeremy Peters made 10 saves in goal for Prince Peace. Twins Dylan and Dakota Michels each had a shot for the Irish, with Dylan’s shot on goal.

“Overall, I think that there were some positives we can take from tonight’s game and a few things we still need to work on,” Simmons said.

Minnesota State University-Mankato's football team has ended its boycott of reinstated head coach Todd Hoffner, who successfully fought child pornography charges and other misconduct accusations that removed him from the job for 20 months.

Hoffner said he assured the players, who refused to take the practice field Wednesday, that interim coach Aaron Keen, who led the team in Hoffner's absence, will continue in a major role with the team.
