Saints selected for A.I.I. events

CLINTON – The Association of Independent Institutions announced the five-team fields for the A.I.I. baseball and softball tournaments Friday. Both Ashford programs have qualified for the postseason events, scheduled for May 1-3 in Victoria, Texas.

The baseball team joins California State University-San Marcos, Louisiana State University-Alexandria, Fisher College (Mass.) and Houston-Victoria in the five-team field at Riverside Stadium.

The winner of the tournament will earn an automatic berth to the NAIA Nationals Opening Round Tournament on May 10-14. Sites and game times will be determined at a later date.

On the other side of the ledger, the AU softball team joins California State University-San Marcos, the University of British Columbia, Houston-Victoria and Louisiana State University-Alexandria in the five-team field, held at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.

The winner of the men’s tournament and the top two programs from the softball tournament will earn automatic berths to the NAIA Nationals Opening Round Tournaments.

Softball swept

JOLIET, Ill. – Ashford suffered a pair of comeback losses Friday at the University of St. Francis tournament.

Judson University (Ill.) took Game 1 12-4 in five innings before Huntington University (Ind.) rallied for a 5-4 win in Game 2.

Sophomore Alex Bitto led the Saints with three hits and two RBIs, including her third home run of the year. Fellow sophomores Shelby Hobelman and Kalyn Ohlemeyer also blasted homers.

The Saints (13-13) will look to rebound today, when they tangle with Indiana Wesleyan University and the host-Fighting Saints of St. Francis.

Tennis wins

CRETE, Neb. – After being idle for a couple of weeks, the Ashford tennis teams swept Doane College on Friday.

The 26th-ranked women swept Doane 9-0, while the men’s team battled to a 7-2 victory over their hosts.

With the victories, the women stand at 8-1this season while the men improve to 7-4.
