Volleyball: Fulton falls to Newman

STERLING, Ill. — Fulton and Sterling Newman split a pair of close games before Newman pulled away to win the deciding third set Tuesday in Three Rivers Conference volleyball.

The Comets won 24-26, 28-26, 25-13.

Chelsea Lesniewski led the Steamers (6-15, 5-7 conference) with 16 kills, while Rachael Beiermann added eight and a team-high 16 assists. Betsy Leonard had four blocks, Averi Leitzen had 18 digs and Jamie Huennekens had 10 serving points, including three aces.

River Hawks win

CLINTON — Prince of Peace pulled even after winning the second game, but Easton Valley responded by winning the next two for a 25-19, 17-25, 25-10, 25-9 victory in Tri-Rivers Conference play at Central Catholic.

Sydney Laufenberg had 10 kills and three blocks to lead the Irish (1-18).

Prophets rally

AMBOY, Ill. — Prophetstown took advantage of several strong serving rotations to record a 20-25, 25-18, 25-14 comeback victory against Amboy in Three Rivers Conference action.

Karlie Stafford had a six-point serving run, and Katlyn Shirley and Clare Kramer each added three in a row as the Prophets (6-14, 4-7 Three Rivers) won the second set. Kate Fringer delivered four in a row twice and Claire Milnes served four aces in the third-set win.

Stafford and Milnes had 11 kills each for Prophetstown, and Kali Fetrow recorded a season-high six.

Erie sweeps Riverdale

ERIE, Ill. — Savannah Mettler recorded nine kills, and Rachel Cobert added eight Tuesday to lead Erie past Riverdale 25-15, 25-15 in Three Rivers Conference play.

Mary Chapman dished out 22 assists for the Cardinals, and Courtney Cobert had a team-high nine digs.

Marquette evens record

WHEATLAND — Marquette Cathlolic pushed its record to the .500 mark Tuesday with a 25-20, 25-17, 24-26, 25-22 victory against Tri-Rivers Conference foe Calamus-Wheatland.

Blake Banowetz had 16 kills and 24 digs to lead the Mohawks (12-12). Stephanie Petersen had 10 kills for the Warriors, while McKenna Luepker led the way with 19 digs and three aces.

Marquette will play host to Calamus-Wheatland and Prince of Peace at 5 p.m. Thursday in Tri-Rivers tournament pool play.
