Steamers finish in 4th

---- — MENDOTA, Ill. — Starting strong was Fulton’s trademark as it placed fourth Saturday at the Mendota volleyball tournament.

The Steamers won the first game in four of their five matches but won just once in their other seven games.

Fulton split all three of its matches in pool play to advance to the semifinals and nearly made it to the championship, losing a close final match against Coal City in the semifinals. The Steamers won the first game 25-19 and lost the second 25-16 before the Coalers pulled out a 25-23 win in Game 3.

The Steamers also jumped in front of Ottawa in the third-place match with a 25-19 win in the first set before Ottawa came back to win the next two 27-25 and 25-10.

Besty Leonard was the leader in kills (39), blocks (15) and ace serves (12) for the Steamers, while Rachael Beiermann had 31 kills and one more assist than Olivia Edfors (55-54). Averi Leitzen was the team leader with 66 digs.

The Steamers honor their seniors Tuesday in the Senior Night match against Prophetstown at Fulton’s Stan Borgman Court in the school’s east gym.

Prophets take 2nd

SHERRARD, Ill. — Prophetstown went 4-0 in pool play and finished second Saturday at the Sherrard tournament, losing 25-9, 25-16 to Prairie Central in the championship match.

Clare Kramer, Claire Milnes and Kate Fringer all were named to the all-tournament team for the Prophets (10-16). Kramer, an outside hitter had 19 kills and 29 digs; Milnes, a middle hitter, had 21 kills and 11 blocks; and Fringer recorded 59 assists.

In pool play of the 10-team tournament, Prophetstown beat Mercer County of Aledo 21-9, 21-14; beat Kewanee 19-21, 21-12, 15-9; defeated Farmington 21-17, 21-10; and swept Morrison 21-10, 21-9.

Erie nabs 5th

LANARK, Ill. — Erie claimed fifth place Saturday at the second annual Linda Ludwig Memorial Volleyball Tournament hosted by Eastland High School.

Mary Chapman earned all-tournament honors for the Cardinals.

Eastland won the team title, while East Dubuque took second, United Township of East Moline was third and DeKalb took fourth. Freeport Aquin was sixth, followed by Milledgeville, Sterling Newman, Riverdale, River Ridge, Ashton-Franklin Center and Putnam County in 12th place.

Marquette gets 4th

CENTRAL CITY — Marquette Catholic claimed fourth place Saturday in the finals of the Tri-Rivers Conference tournament.

Springville beat Marquette 25-11, 25-15 in the semifinals, then Midland defeated the Mohawks 25-22, 25-21 for third place.

Blake Banowetz had team highs with 10 kills and four aces in the two matches for the Mohawks (14-14), while Justine Kalmes had 23 assists and Anna Ambrosy recorded 16 digs.

Springville defeated Alburnett 25-18, 25-15 for the championship.

Sabers go 1-3

DAVENPORT — Central DeWitt finished 1-3 on Saturday at the Davenport Central tournament, with its lone win coming against the host school.

Abby Grau had eight kills in the 25-17, 25-23 win against the Blue Devils and tied Amanda Brainerd for team honors on the day with 18. Brainerd led the way with nine blocks, while Grau had a team-leading six aces. Mackenzie Kuehn had 67 assists, and Steph Schrader made 21 digs for the Sabers (9-23).

CHS freshman win

ELDRIDGE — Clinton’s freshman team finished 4-0 to win the Pool A title Saturday at the Lancer Freshman Invitational hosted by North Scott High School.

Clinton beat Burlington 21-2, 21-8; North Scott Red 21-11, 21-6; Bettendorf Gold 17-21, 21-15, 15-11; and Davenport West Red 21-4, 21-5. Bettendorf Gold finished second with a 3-1 record.

Muscatine Purple was the Pool B champion, and Pleasant Valley won Pool C. Both of those teams also finished 4-0.
