College soccer: Ashford rallies after halftime

DAVENPORT – Playing in its final road game of the regular season, the fifth-ranked Ashford University men’s soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to down St. Ambrose 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Davenport Soccer Complex.

Freshman midfielder Murilo Ceruli netted the game-winner with less than nine minutes to play to propel the Saints to victory. Senior Lucas Almeida and sophomore Tim Krautheim also scored for the Saints, who improved to 12-3-1.

Tyler Clark scored both of the Fighting Bees’ goals, but it wasn’t enough as SAU dropped to 11-7 overall.

Almeida opened the scoring in the 19th minute, taking a feed from freshman Daniel Dreier and beating Ambrose keeper Kyle Williams for his 10th goal of the season.

But the Bees answered shortly after, as Clark scored in the 22nd and 25th minutes to give St. Ambrose a 2-1 lead they took into the break.

Ashford knotted things up just over a minute into the second half, when Dreier fed Krautheim for his fourth goal of the season.

With time ticking down, Ceruli put the Saints on top for good in the 82nd minute, scoring his fifth goal on an unassisted effort.

Senior Patrick Kinsella stopped one shot for the Saints to earn his 10th win of the year. Williams stopped seven shots in defeat.

Ashford held a 17-8 advantage in shots, with Javier Ramirez firing five shots to lead all attackers.

The Saints will close the regular season Sunday, when they welcome Upper Iowa University to Clinton. First whistle is set for 1 p.m. from South Campus.
