Un-luck of Irish (with VIDEO)

Prince of Peace settles for split vs. Springville

CLINTON — Prince of Peace stressed Springville to the max and beyond at Ashford University Field on Monday, but the end result was still a disappointment.

Springville came away with the sweep, defeating the Irish 4-2 in nine innings in Game 1, then scoring five runs in the fourth inning in the nightcap to win 9-2 in Game 2.

Video: Prince of Peace coach Bob Mulholland discusses how this season differs from 2013.

“To take these guys to nine innings is quite an accomplishment,” said Irish coach Bob Mulholland said. “This is a pretty good team we played; I can’t say enough about our guys and how they performed. I thought we had them in the first game.”

Prince of Peace scored in the fourth inning as Devin Bly scored on a base hit from Trevor Dickherber. In that same inning, the Irish had three straight singles that set up the Dickherber hit.

The Irish again scored in the fifth inning when Lucas Laufenberg scored on a wild pitch.

Meanwhile, Laufenberg threw three innings on the mound before Jon Weisner threw the final six innings.

Laufenberg didn’t have too strong of a start, hitting Sam Scriver in the shoulder on the very first pitch of the game. Scriver stole second base two pitches later, and later scored from that spot thanks to a single from Trevor Hullett.

Laufenberg settled down after that, allowing just one additional hit along with a walk in the second inning.

In Weisner’s six innings of work, he allowed three runs (one earned) while walking three Orioles and striking out two.

Two of the three runs came in the ninth inning due to nervous Irish defense. Prince of Peace committed three errors in the frame, including one from Weisner trying to pick off a runner at first base, and two coming from hurried throws that were also errors.
