L'Kings edged in return home

CLINTON — Kane County continued to frustrate Clinton, as the LumberKings returned home but lost 2-1 to the Cougars on Friday in Midwest League baseball at Ashford University Field.

The win was the Cougars’ eighth in 10 games against Clinton this season. It spoiled a fine outing by a pair of Clinton pitchers. Blake Holovach (4-2) started and scattered four hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out seven. Rafael Pineda finished with two innings of no-hit ball.

Both Kane County runs scored with with two outs.

Shawon Dunston scored what turned out to be the game-winning run. He led off the top of the sixth inning with a walk, took second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a double by Kyle Schwarber, the Chicago Cubs’ first pick in the recent draft. Schwarber is batting .388 since joining the Cougars.

Kane County scored its first run in the second inning when Jacob Rogers singled with two outs and scored on Cael Brockmeyer’s triple to right field.

The LumberKings also did their damage with two outs in the sixth.

Aaron Barbosa walked with two outs, was singled to third by Jack Reinheimer and scored on Chantz Mack’s line-drive single up the middle. Reinheimer was thrown out at third to end the threat. Mack finished 4-for-4.

Clinton had another threat in the eighth after Lonnie Kauppila and Martin Peguero hit back-to-back singles. Each runner moved up when Barbosa was thrown out trying to bunt for a hit, then Reinheimer flew out to end the inning.

The loss came 24 hours after a pair of three-run innings helped the LumberKings avoid a sweep at Burlington as they ended a road trip. The LumberKings defeated the Bees 6-5 on thursday night at Community Field.
