Sabers win own invitational

CLINTON — Emmitt Enyeart, Jake Kagemann, Drew Schroeder and Chase Kraklio won individual championships Saturday to lead host Central DeWitt to the team title at the Saber Invitational wrestling tournament.

The Sabers scored 204 points to outdistance Solon (190) and Lisbon (188) in the chase for the team title. Central DeWitt had a finalist in every weight from 145 to 182 pounds.

Enyeart got the run going with a 5-2 victory over junior varsity teammate Carter Cahill in the final at 145 pounds. After Mason Cousins took second at 152, Kagemann, Schroeder and Kraklio won consecutive championships.

Kagemann defeated Maquoketa’s Logan Mayberry 6-4 at 160 pounds, Schroeder scored an 8-0 major decision against Northeast’s Blake Dierks at 170 and Kraklio pinned seventh-ranked Danny Whitmore of Solon in 5:19 at 182 pounds.

Brice Everson was the only other champion for an area team. He won the title at 126 pounds to help Camanche place fifth with 100 points. He defeated Lisbon’s Chase McLaughlin by technical fall, 16-0 in 3:30. Teammate Nate Thoms added a second-place finish at 106. He was pinned by fourth-ranked Drew West of Highland in the final.

Maquoketa finished eighth in the team standings, while Northeast tied for ninth. Garrett Moeller (285) joined Dierks in claiming second place for the Rebels.

“At the end of the day, we felt the kids were wrestling hard, working on being more aggressive and we had several good matches that we were in despite the final score,” Northeast coach Ken Schoon said. “The goal now is to continue to get better with every practice as we take a break from competition.”

Panthers 2nd at home

ERIE, Ill. -- Ben Corlett’s second 13-second pin of the day put the finishing touches on the victory as Sherrard won a four-way battle for the team title Saturday at the Erie/Prophetstown Holiday Tournament.

Sherrard finished with 174 points, six ahead of runner-up Erie/Prophetstown. Illini Bluffs (160) and Morrison (154) were close behind.

The Panthers got back-to-back championships from Jared Cole at 145 and Dylan Binion at 152. Cole scored a 10-1 major decision over Zach O’Connor of Illini Bluffs 10-1, while Binion defeated Austin Keller of Morrison 5-0.

Nick Williams of Erie/Prophetstown was the runner-up at 170, and teammate Noah Eads took second at 195.

Morrison’s Dylan Keller beat Cole Grant of Fulton 7-4 in the final at 132 pounds. It was the only one of Keller’s four matches in which he didn’t pin his opponent. The Mustangs also got a title from Austin Shoup at 182. He pinned all three of his opponents, including Jon Stoops of Sherrard in the finals.

Tyler Todd of Morrison took second at 220.

Fulton claimed 13th place in the 13-team field.

    Bring out the rally...opossum?

After a delay that involved the opossum making itself at home at Modern Woodmen Park, the LumberKings (14-24, 44-62) found a new rally animal to drive its first win in a week. It took a ninth inning foul out sacrifice fly by left fielder Chantz Mack to defeat the hometown Quad Cities River Bandits 6-5.

The win snapped a six game losing streak for Clinton and a four game winning streak for Quad Cities.

  • Jones leaves UNO program

Jalen Jones is done with basketball — for now, anyway.
The 6-foot-5 Clinton High grad who had committed to play for Nebraska-Omaha, has left the program, and according to his Facebook page, has enrolled at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
The enrollment office at the community college confirmed that Jones was registered for classes this fall at Kirkwood. Kirkwood coach Bryan Petersen, a Clinton High graduate, declined to comment and gave no indication that Jones would play basketball for the Eagles this winter.
"College basketball isn't for everybody," Clinton coach Nick Lawrence said. "A little time away might do him some good."
Jones came home to Clinton after spending just a few days with the Mavericks, and enrolled to Kirkwood shortly thereafter.
Jones, the Herald's Player of the Year, averaged 19 points a game for the River Kings in his senior season and finished with the second-most rebounds with 160.
He shot 41 percent on the floor and 28 percent from 3-point territory. He committed to Omaha before last season started in October.
