Irish close regular season with win

CLINTON — Prince of Peace scored only four points in the second quarter Friday night and faced a 22-16 halftime deficit to Faith Christian.

“They were very sluggish the first half,” Prince of Peace coach Gerry Murphy said after the Irish’s 50-39 win. “We stood around a lot and didn’t execute well.”

The Irish (4-17) got off to a better start in the third quarter two baskets from Lucas Laufenberg and one basket from Quinton Schnier to tie the game.

The Irish stepped up their offensive play during this quarter by making quick passes and reversing the ball frequently. Nic Roth scored eight of his game-high 14 points with Laufenberg adding five of his 13 to end the third quarter with a 35-30 lead.

The Falcons came fighting back in the fourth quarter, scoring five points to the tie the game up again. The Irish answered right back with a 15-4 run to end the game.

“I thought everyone played well,” Murphy said. “We played more as a team during the second half and played the game that we know how to play.”

The first quarter began with a fast-paced game, going back and forth between the Falcons and the Irish. The game was tied four times in the quarter. With Austyn Williams scoring the last basket to end the quarter, the Irish seemed to have momentum with the lead at 12-10.

Beginning the second quarter, the Falcons went on a 6-0 run against the Irish. Murphy called a timeout in hopes of regaining some of the momentum they had in the first quarter. Immediately following the timeout, the Irish began scoring again. Also playing stronger defense on the Falcons to reduce their amount of shots, the Irish finished the first half trailing by six.

Murphy said that during halftime he told the team, “We need to screen out, play defense and do the things that were good at. We need to dictate the game unlike the first half.”

The Irish begin the postseason Monday by hosting Calamus-Wheatland with tip set for 7 p.m.

Hoffner said he assured the players, who refused to take the practice field Wednesday, that interim coach Aaron Keen, who led the team in Hoffner's absence, will continue in a major role with the team.
