Indians smile all the way to title

(Continued)

Plus, the 1-2 finish brought in 18 team points.

“In a race like that, we’re getting double points for the team,” Osaro said.

Derek Harksen earned a bundle of points for the Indians, winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchoring wins in the 800 and 1,600 relays.

“My 200 was the best,” he said of the win in 22.47 seconds. “I think I got a PR (personal record) in the 200.”

There was some disappointment, though, because they didn’t reach their goal in the 1,600, where they hoped to qualify for the Drake Relays.

“We were three seconds slow,” Harksen said after seeing the winning time of 3:32.05. “We all gave our all, though.”

Camanche also got wins in the discus — Cody Mensinger threw it 127 feet, 9 inches — the 3,200 relay and the 400 relay, a race in which the Indians have recorded the second-best time in 2A this spring.

“We have a pretty solid group up and down, starting with the 3,200 (the first individual race of the meet), where we were second and third,” Metzger said. “One of the biggest surprises was the four-by-one. We subbed two guys — we took out Osaro and Harksen and put in Aaron Shum and Thomas Brantley (and won in 44.83 seconds).”

Northeast’s second-place finish featured two individual wins for Eli Kaczinski in the 3,200 and 1,600. He tried to make it a distance sweep in the 800, but despite passing two runners on the second lap he had to settle for third. Teammate Nick Anderson won the 800 in 2:06.34, though, so that took away some of the sting.

“I’m happy for Nick; it was a good win,” Kaczinski said. “It’s real tough (running the three distance races). It’s all about endurance by the time you hit that point (the 800). I still set my PR (2:08.28). It’s not very often I run all three. It’s usually an option for me to run the 800.”
