STERLING, Ill. —
STERLING, Ill. — Three Rivers Conference rivals Morrison and Sterling Newman put up a defensive battle in the first half Friday before Newman's offense exploded in the third quarter.
The Comets scored four times in the third quarter and rolled up a 42-0 victory at Roscoe Eads Stadium.
Newman finished with 318-61 advantage in total yardage.
Both teams struggled on offense in the first half — each had fewer than 100 yards of offense — but the Comets (3-1, 2-0 conference) finally put the first points on the scoreboard when Jake Snow scored on a 5-yard run with 9 minutes, 27 seconds left in the third quarter.
After that, they kept lighting up the scoreboard.
Dillan Heffelfinger (12 carries, 56 yards) scored a pair of touchdowns just 1:32 apart, then Snow (15 carries, 171 yards) added a 13-yard run to make in 28-0 at the end of three quarters.
Ellot Jensen added a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown runs to seal the victory.
Austin Shoup led Morrison (2-2, 1-1) with 47 yards rushing on 13 attempts.
PRESTON — Easton Valley's defense came up with a couple of key plays as the River Hawks survived a second-half scare from Central of Elkader and won 41-40 on Friday in Eight Player District 4 high school football.
The River Hawks' defense stopped the Warriors a foot short of the goal line on a two-point attempt after the Warriors pulled within 41-40 with 1 minute, 33 seconds remaining.
"That was big; that was huge," Easton Valley coach Kevin Behr said. "They make that two-point and that's the game.
"I talked to the kids — they allowed three touchdowns in the first half and three in the second half — and I commended our defense. They came up with some big plays. I thought Andrew Driscoll played a heck of a game on defense, and Zach Peiffer had a big game on defense. He stayed home on a fourth-down counter play and stopped them."
Driscoll rushed for 173 yards and scored four touchdowns, three in the first half when the River Hawks (3-0) built a 35-18 lead. But the Warriors (1-4, 1-3 district) came roaring back.
"We pride ourselves on being an explosive team, and we kind of sputtered in the second half," Behr said.
Seeing his first action of the season, Nathan Fitzgerald carried the ball 16 times for 105 yards and two second-half scores.
"They had those five or six guys come off suspension, and that made a big difference," Behr said.
Behr expects another tough game next Friday when the River Hawks step out of district play and travel to Gilbertville to play Don Bosco, the No. 1 team in the state.
Beckman bops Indians
CAMANCHE — Dyersville Beckman piled up 291 yards on the ground while holding Camanche to 34 total yards Friday in a 55-6 victory in Class 2A District 4.
Tyler Hirsch carred 12 times for 120 yards to lead the Blazers (2-2, 1-1 district).
Camanche (1-3, 0-2) struggled all night on offense, gaining 33 yards on 30 rushes and completing just one pass for 1 yard. The bright spot was special teams, where Derek Harksen averaged 49 yards on five punts.
Ryan Langston led Camanche's running attack with 34 yards on eight carries, while Easton McDaniel added 27 on 14 carries.
Cardinals roll at home
MAQUOKETA — Maquoketa got its offense rolling early Friday, scoring four times in the first quarter on the way to a 59-6 win against Anamosa in Class 3A District 6 football.
Jacob Kloft scored four touchdowns as the win improved the Cardinals' record to 3-1, 2-0 in district action, including a forfeit win last week against Central DeWitt.
Maquoketa's defense sent Anamosa (0-4, 0-2) three-and-out on its first three possessions and converted on the offensive end once it took over each possession.
Two big runs and a 34-yard pass from Trent Bollman to Alex Gilmore set up the Cardinals at the 2-yard line, and Kloft scored on the next play with 9 minutes, 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Maquoketa took over at midfield on an Anamosa punt moments later. A 30-yard run by Bollman set up a 33-yard field goal by Cory Wirth.
Once again, Anamosa was forced to punt on its next possession, and Maquoketa's Ben Strathman returned it 35 yards to the Anamosa 26-yard line. A 20-yard run by Cohl Kueter gave the Cardinals a first-and-goal, and two plays later, Kloft scored on a 4-yard run for a 17-0 lead with 4:18 left in the quarter.
Anamosa recorded a first down on its next possession but again was forced to punt. The Cardinals struck again when Cohl Kueter went 88 yard with a screen pass from Bollman as the lead increased to 24-0.
The Cardinals upped their lead to 45-0 at the half and played the second half with a continuous clock.
Sabers get first win
VAN HORNE — After forfeiting a pair of wins earlier in the week, Central DeWitt got back in the win column Friday with a victory against host Benton Community in Class 3A District 6.
Benton (2-2, 1-1 district) opened the scoring, but the Sabers (1-3, 1-1 district) responded with a tying touchdown in the first quarter, then three more in the second to go ahead 27-7 at the half.
