Fillies take control vs. Fulton

FULTON, Ill. — While Fulton’s softball team is figuring out the small things, Morrison is continuing its tear across the Three Rivers Conference. Morrison continued its dominant season Monday by defeating Fulton 9-0.

Morrison scored in five of the seven innings while its pitching from Allie Wiersema and Lauren Rice was near-flawless.

Morrison scored four in the fourth, where the Fillies had four hits. There were two-extra base hits, doubles from leadoff hitter Shannon Finneran and Wiersema. Chelsea Eads singled but later in the inning was thrown out at home on an attempted steal on a wild pitch.

Finneran scored in the first inning on a wild pitch thrown by Fulton starter Camerin Huizenga, who lasted 3 1/3 innings.

“Our hitting came around for us, and the girls played a great game today,” Fillies coach Tammy Deter said.

Rice and Wiersema combined for 13 strikeouts and allowed only three Fulton baserunners. Rice threw the first three innings before Wiersema recorded the final 12 outs.

“They’re both outstanding pitchers, and they compliment each other very well,” Deter said. “They do what they do best, and they did a good job today. They’ve worked hard to get to where they’re at.”

Morrison got its 15th win of the season and remained perfect in TRAC play at 5-0.

“We have a good time; they’re easy to coach,” Deter said. “This season has been a lot of fun so far.”

On the other side, Fulton is a young team trying to put the pieces together in order to beat a team of Morrison’s caliber. For example, Huizenga and Maddy Andresen were the lone Steamers to compile hits against the Rice-Wiersema combination.

“Making small strides are big leaps in our world,” Fulton coach Jessica Rosenow said. “Just seeing them play a complete game is an improvement.”
