---- — BETTENDORF -- Playing without its top player, the Clinton boys tennis team saw its season end Saturday with a 5-0 loss to Bettendorf in Iowa Class 2A preliminary substate team play.
“Today our top guy (Evan Hood) was absent celebrating his brother’s graduation, so everyone had to play one spot harder,” Clinton coach Jonathan Mitchell said. “The team was so supportive and understood how important this milestone was to Evan and his family. The guys never backed down from the challenge and played their hearts out, but in the end Bettendorf has an amazing team. “
Connor Nolan and Sameer Ansari came the closest to picking up wins for the River Kings.
Nolan pushed Isaac Luebke to a second-set tiebreaker before Luebeke won 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 3 singles, and Josh Sumhlei of Bettendorf beat Ansari 7-5, 6-4 at No. 4.
“This was the fifth time we have battled against Bettendorf this season,” said Mitchell, who completed his first year as coach. “It didn’t matter that they took the first four battles, our guys’ spirits were high and never once did I hear a negative comment about our chances. Our first loss and final loss of the season was to Bettendorf.”
