Second helping of second (with VIDEO)

IOWA CITY — Placing second in the state tournament is not one of those experiences a player wants to repeat. Unfortunately for Camanche seniors Kylie Vogel and Lindsey Grams, that wasn’t an option Friday.

Vogel and Grams lost to Dubuque Wahlert twins Caroline and Elizabeth Ott 6-3, 6-4 in the doubles championship at the Iowa Class 2A girls tennis state tournament at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.

“It wasn’t as good as we planned, but we’re still happy we made it that far,” Grams said.

It was the second year in a row the Camanche pair lost in the finals, and on top of that, Vogel placed second in singles as a sophomore.

“It’s really tough for her,” Camanche coach Erin Montgomery said of Vogel. “Her goal has been to win a state championship. Last year she wanted it. This year she wanted it. She’s worked her butt off. It’s tough.

“Right now I can say to them both that second place in the state is pretty darn good, but it’s still tough to lose. Down the road they’ll agree with me that they did some pretty special things, but right now they’re down.”

Despite being down, Vogel said that overall her experience at Camanche was quite positive.

“I’m grateful for all my success and everything,” she said. “I’m happy with all the success that Camanche tennis has had over several years, and I wouldn’t change it. I’m going to miss it a lot next year.”

Early in the match it appeared that Vogel and Grams might be able to beat the Ott sisters for the second year in a row. (Last year’s matchup came in the semifinals.) The first set started with each side breaking serve in the first three games, then Camanche went up 3-1 as Grams held serve in Game 4.
