Indians take 2 against the Irish

CAMANCHE -- The Camanche Indians kicked off Senior Night the right way with a 5-1 win over the visiting Prince of Peace Irish on Monday evening. The Indians followed with a 13-3 win to earn the sweep.

“Being a senior my last time, got to go out with a bang,” Camanche’s Cody Mensinger said, echoing the sentiment held by all three seniors on the team.

Derek Harksen led off Game 1 with a double and was promptly driven in on a Blake Bialas single, giving Camanche the quick 1-0 lead.

The Indians didn’t stop there, adding two more runs in the inning on a Seth Boysen single and Kyler Campie double to lead 3-0.

Camanche starter Mensinger settled into a groove, holding the Irish hitless into the fourth inning. Jon Weisner had the first Irish hit, and was driven in two batters later on a long double from Jeremy Peters.

That was the only blemish on the night for Mensinger from the mound. He went all seven innings for the Indians, allowing one run on three hits.

“He’s been our ace all year,” Camanche coach Daryl Cochran said. “He’s just had some bad luck. It’s nice to get him out there and get him a W.”

Prince of Peace starter Lucas Laufenberg found his own groove in the second inning, striking out four straight batters between the second and third innings. He finished the third allowing another single, but no other damage was done. He was then pulled between innings and relieved by Seth Moeller.

Moeller ran into trouble each of the three innings he was on the mound, but Camanche didn’t break through against him until the sixth inning.

Moeller loaded the bases in the fourth on two walks and a bunt single, but he got out of the jam unscathed. In the fifth, he walked Mensinger, who advanced all the way to third before Moeller got out of another jam.
