Rebels split, tie for title

BELLEVUE — Cole Dickey keyed a Northeast comeback and Matt Haferbier finished it off Saturday, giving the Rebels a doubleheader split with Bellevue and a share of the final Big East Conference baseball championship with Lisbon.

After Bellevue scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh to win the first game 3-2, Northeast repaid the Comets in Game 2 with an 8-7 win.

Bellevue led 7-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh — each team serves as the home team once in Big East doubleheaders — but Northeast (19-8, 12-4 conference) refused to settle for second place in the conference.

With one out, two runners on base and a two strikes on him, Dickey hit his first home run of the season to tie the game.

“Clutch,” Northeast coach Tyler Howe said. The previous night, Dickey drove in eight runs in a 14-3 win at Wapello.

One out later, with a runner on first base, Haferbier ended it when he hit a double to drive in the winning run.

“We made a lot of errors and played sloppy baseball, but we never quit and found a way to win,” Howe said. “I’m super proud of the guys.”

Northeast appeared to be headed for victory in the first game behind Dickey’s pitching. He blanked the Comets for five innings before they came back.

“Cole pitched a great game,” Howe said. “We had a lot of opportunities to score and couldn’t come up with a big hit.”

River Kings fall

IOWA CITY — Iowa City West scored six runs in the first two innings on its way to a 7-4 non-conference win against Clinton on Saturday.

Ezra Reiners had two hits, two steals and two runs to lead the Trojans.

Cody Nolan continued his hot hitting for the River Kings (19-10). He went 3-for-3 and is batting .559 (19-for-34) in the past 10 games. The River Kings managed just three more hits, though.
