Indians confident about volleyball postseason

CAMANCHE — As his team prepared for today's regional quarterfinals, Camanche volleyball coach Josh Davis had an optimistic tone.

"It's all in front of us," he said. "There's nobody we can't compete with."

Teams in the largest three classes in Iowa open their postseason tonight, and four area teams are in action -- Clinton gets a bye until Thursday. Camanche travels to Tipton for a Class 3A Region 8 game, Northeast entertains Monticello in Class 3A Region 7 and Maquoketa and Central DeWitt square off in DeWitt in Class 4A Region 6. All three matches start at 7 p.m.

"We've talked a lot about it," Davis said. "If we play our best we have a chance to beat anybody in our region."

On the other hand, he knows nothing will come easily for the Indians (17-11). Tipton enters the tournament with an 18-12 record, and the winner will face either eighth-ranked Mount Vernon (22-10) or West Liberty (19-12) on Thursday.

"It's a tough region," Davis said. "One thing I'm discovering in girls sports with more classes (is) you have to win fewer games, but there are tough teams. I think it's a fair draw."

Illinois also kicks off its postseason tonight.

Two area teams, Morrison and Prophetstown, square off against each other in a Class 2A regional match in Port Byron, Ill., while West Carroll takes on South Beloit in Dakota. Erie (Class 1A) and Fulton (2A) received byes in the quarterfinals of their respective regionals and will play in the semifinals on Tuesday, Erie at the Eastland Regional in Lanark and Fulton at the Rivedale Regional in Port Byron.
