---- — BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The 23rd-ranked Ashford men’s golf team brought home its third team title of the year Monday, winning the one-day Cereal City Shootout with a 2-under-par total of 574.

Ashford totaled its best score for a 36-hole tournament in the spring and beat runner-up Indiana Tech by 14 shots. The 574 is the Saints’ second-best score of the year, three strokes shy of the team’s 571 last fall at the Grand View Classic.

“I’m really proud of how the guys closed the regular season,” coach Josh Heiple said. “This was a really tough course, and our guys finished the regular season the way they wanted to.”

The Saints also claimed their third medalist honor of the spring. Senior Dan Balgooyen finished with a 2-under 142 (70-72). The Muskegon, Mich.-native earned his second career medalist honor, besting fellow Saint Jimmy Joachim (71-71—142), who was playing as an individual, in a playoff.

Four other Saints finished in the top 10. Senior Ross Milne made his spring debut in the Ashford top five and finished with a 1-under 143 (73-70) to tie for third. Fellow senior Chien Hau Tan also had a 143 (70-73).

Freshman Joar Bjelkholm tied for seventh with a 73-73—146, while senior Trent Specht shot a 75-74—149.

Playing as individuals, sophomores Jonathan LaRue (76-74) and Ryan Hilton (74-76) each carded a 150 to tie for 12th place.

The Saints will look to carry the momentum over to the Association of Independent Institutions Championships on April 29 and 30 in Victoria, Texas.
