LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Ashford's Lucas Almeida was named the the Association of Independent Institutions Men's Soccer Player of Year when the league handed out its awards for men's and women's soccer Thursday.
Between the two Ashford soccer teams, the Saints placed 13 players on the all-league squads, which included seven first-team selections.
Almeida, a senior forward from Sau Paulo, Brazil, has 10 goals and 26 points for an Ashford team that earned the top seed in the A.I.I. men's tournament and currently sits No.. 3 in the nation with a 12-3-1 record. The men opened tournament play this morning against Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.).
Joining Almeida on the league's first team are a trio of freshman in midfielders Caio Ruiz and Daniel Dreier and defenseman Fernando Machado.
Junior forward Javier Ramirez and senior goalkeeper Patrick Kinsella were honored with second-team recognition.
On the women's side, forward Hollie Babut, midfielder Jordan Pisesky and defender Sierra Romero landed on the first team. Goalkeeper Jessica VanDyke, midfielder Hannah Scheid and forward Alicia Tamburro earned spots on the second team, while defender Rochelle Douglas was named to the honorable mention squad.
All seven players helped the No. 15-ranked Saints to a 12-3 record and the top seed in this weekend's A.I.I. Tournament. They were scheduled to take on Lindenwood-Belleville at 3 p.m. today.
