---- — DAVENPORT — One of Clinton’s top golfers, Ryan Rursch, went down with illness Thursday and was unable to finish his round. His River King teammates stepped up to deliver Clinton’s first dual meet win of the season.
Justin Tomona, Koby Cleary and Jake Luett each fired in the 30s through nine holes as the River Kings outshot Davenport North by 20 strokes, 154-174, at Duck Creek Golf Course. Tomona was the meet medalist with a 1-over-par 36 trough nine holes. It was an impressive score considering the way Tomona’s day began.
“He started off with three bogeys on the first three holes,” Clinton coach Paul Niedermeyer said. But the junior locked in and finished with four pars and two birdies over the last six holes. Tomona was lowest among River Kings with 15 putts.
Niedermeyer said it was great to see his team perform that way especially after losing Rursch early in the meet. Niedermeyer highlighted performances by Cleary, Luett and Aaron Henry, whose scores were 37, 38 and 43.
“Koby didn’t play very well on Monday and was disappointed in himself,” Niedermeyer said, referring to the Burlington Invitational. “He came back today and showed what he’s capable of shooting.”
Including Tomona, the River Kings were 1-2-3 among individuals.
“Those four picked up the slack that Ryan left when he didn’t finish,” Niedermeyer said. “That shows a little depth to me, and that’s good. We need that.
“I said just play the golf course, don’t play the competition,” he added. “I thought they really did a good job in not getting caught up in what the North kids were doing.”
The low round for North was Mitchell Stoughton’s 41.
Next up for Clinton is a trip to the North Scott Invitational on Monday. Niedermeyer said it would be a good test for the River Kings, as the meet features several Mississippi Athletic Conference foes.
