It's close-but-not-quite for Sabers

DES MOINES -- After running the anchor leg and nearly catching Kate Sandage of Greene County in her heat of the shuttle hurdle relay, Central DeWitt’s Sam Barr knew it would be a matter of a fraction of a second as to whether the Sabers would earn a spot in Saturday’s finals at the Iowa Class 3A track and field state meet.

“I think we’re on the border,” she said after the Sabers finished in 1 minute, 8.76 seconds. “Most people are running in the 1:07s, and I know we can on a good day.”

As it turned out, Thursday was one of those other kind of days at the state meet.

Moments later, Central DeWitt learned it had been disqualified from the race. As it turned out, it didn’t matter. Greene County was the last team to make it in, and the Sabers would have finished 11th.

It was that kind of day for the Sabers -- close to scoring points and making the finals, but not quite.

The boys’ 3,200-meter relay team of Remington Meggers, Kyle Marti, Connor Dalldorf and Mitch Green placed 10th in 8:14.23, two seconds off the eighth-place time that earned a team point.

The girls’ 3,200 relay unit of Sarah Schoel, Amanda Brainerd, Shelby Carlson and Brittany McNamara was 12th in 10:01.14.

The boys’ shuttle hurdle foursome of Drew Dieckmann, Jake Kagemann, Tyler Stillmunkes and Logan Sheppard was 19th in 1:02.38.

The Sabers’ lone individual entrant Thursday, Abby Willis, took 15th in the discus with a best throw of 105 feet, 6 inches.
