Saints upended in men's debut

CLINTON – Ashford scored first, but Baker University shocked the Saints in men’s soccer Saturday afternoon.

The 15th-ranked Saints were downed 2-1 by Baker University (Kan.) in the 2013 season opener held at AU South Campus.

Ashford and Baker played a scoreless 85 minutes before the Saints received an opportunity for a penalty kick when sophomore forward Tim Krautheim was taken down inside the Baker penalty area. Moments later, Lucas Almeida of Sao Paulo, Brazil, buried a shot in the lower left-hand corner of the goal to put the home squad up 1-0.

But Baker responded with a free-kick goal in the 88th minute of play and the winning goal during the sixth minute of overtime to upset the Saints.

Amer Didic’s unassisted goal tied it with 2:45 remaining in regulation. Then, 5:26 into overtime, Richard Klein scored off an assist from Matt Hamm for the winner.

The Wildcats outshot Ashford 14-11, including a 6-2 margin in the first half, while the Saints held a slight lead in corner kicks, 5-4.

Almeida, along with Javier Ramirez, each tallied three shots for Ashford.

The Saints return to the pitch Friday, when the team travels to Montgomery, Ala., to battle the fifth-ranked Warhawks of Auburn-Montgomery. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m.
