Girls roundup: Reeg returns in Bellevue win

WYOMING — Bellevue outscored Midland 26-9 in the fourth quarter Friday night to earn a 50-41 victory in Big East Conference girls basketball.

The win was the seventh straight for the Comets (7-2, 5-1 conference) but perhaps more importantly it marked the early return of junior guard Ali Reeg.

Reeg was eyeing a return in the middle of the month following knee surgery in the summer.

“I was practicing hard and it wasn’t swelling or anything,” Reeg said. “I felt good, so I talked to my doctor and he gave the OK.”

Bellevue coach Tim Roth sent Reeg into the game for her first action of the season early in the second quarter.

“I was just happy to go in again; I was relieved,” Reeg said. “Once I got out there, it was basketball mode. I was serious and played my game. I felt really good.”

Reeg scored one point in the second quarter and added seven, including a 3-pointer in the second half.

“In the first half, I was just getting back into the groove,” she said. “In the second half, I figured out the team again and got back into the flow. The team played really good.”

Kelsey Ernst led the way for Bellevue with 17 of her game-high 28 points in the second half.

Reeg said she was pleasantly surprised with her first time back on the court.

“It was not as hard as I expected it to be,” she said. “I thought I’d be really slow and out of shape, but practice helped a lot. It will take a little bit for me to be back to normal, but I think it went pretty darn well.”

Rebels knock off Marquette

GOOSE LAKE — Northeast used a 30-12 run during the second and third quarters to hand Marquette Catholic its first Big East Conference loss of the season 59-52 on Friday night.

Marquette (7-2, 6-1 conference) led 15-13 early in the second quarter when the Rebels started their run. Northeast (7-2, 5-1) lead 43-27 midway through the fourth quarter and then held on as the Mohawks closed the game on a 20-12 run.

Nicole Blum scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half for the Mohawks, ranked seventh in Class 1A. For Northeast, Addie Oberman scored 16 points to lead four Rebels in double figures.
