Steamers claim title at own tourney

FULTON, Ill. — Earning a pair of one-run victories along the way, Fulton captured first place Saturday at the Steamer Invitational high school softball tournament at Drive’s Field.

“I’m so proud of the girls and how they played with confidence today,” Fulton coach Jen Pepper said. “After a long, cold day, it is a warm feeling to end it 3-0 with some hardware.”

Two-run innings were the key for the Steamers in their first two victories. They scored twice in the second inning for a 2-1 win against Princeton, then used a two-run fifth to break a 1-1 tie in a 3-2 win against Sherrard.

Chelsea Lesniewski limited Princeton to six hits, and the only run off her was unearned. Katherine Wayne held Sherrard to three hits and walked just one.

The Steamers finished off the title run with a 13-3, five-inning win against West Carroll.

“Fulton had too much firepower for us,” West Carroll coach Don Mathey said. “They have a very nice ballclub.”

Kylie Kennedy went 4-for-4 for Fulton and drove in three runs. Lesniewski also had three RBIs.

The Steamers wasted no time scoring in the game, and Kennedy drove in their first runs.

Jenna Jones reached on an error to lead off the first inning and was sacrificed to second. Walks to Wayne and Lesniewski loaded the bases, and Kennedy came through with a two-run single. The third run scored on Velaye Weinert’s groundout.

Lesniewski added a two-run single in the second inning.

Fulton finished off the Thunder with a five-run fifth that began with a leadoff double by Maddy Andresen and included run-scoring singles by Lesniewski and Kennedy, an RBI error by Weinert and bases-loaded walks by Ann Renkes and Rachel McDonnell.

The Thunder finished 0-3 in the tournament and dropped to 0-9 on the season.
