Rebels stay atop Big East

LISBON — Northeast bounced back from its opening loss in its baseball doubleheader with Lisbon on Thursday to take Game 2 and remain atop the Big East Conference standings.

Although Lisbon ended the Rebels' undefeated streak, putting both teams in a brief tie at 10-1 in the conference with a 6-2 win in the opener, Northeast answered with a 10-6 victory fueled by Ben Hildebrandt and Michael Hartung's multi-hit games.

"We have been successful all year by doing the little things right and playing every pitch. We didn't do that in (Game 1)," Rebels coach Tyler Howe said. "We bounced back in Game 2 and still control our destiny in the conference. I'm proud of the guys' efforts coming back after our first conference loss. Never gave up and kept fighting."

Northeast had a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning in the opener. The Lions opened up a four-run rally and never looked back. Four of Lisbon's six runs were unearned, and the Rebels had five errors.

Cole Dickey took the loss despite five innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

In Game 2, Hildebrandt and Hartung teamed for two hits apiece and added two and three RBIs, respectively. Jared Henfrey added a double while earning a six-inning win with five strikeouts. Charlie Marcucci and Tevin Stoecker added two RBIs each.

Northeast improved to 17-4 overall (11-1 Big East) while Lisbon, ranked ninth in the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association Class 1A poll, fell to 21-5, 10-2 in conference. The Rebels have Bellevue and Preston left to play in the conference, while Lisbon has Midland and Bellevue.
