Fulton/Unity boys capture home meet

FULTON, Ill. — Winning 11 events on its home track, the Fulton/Fulton Unity Christian boys track team outscored everyone to win a quadrangular meet Thursday. Meanwhile, West Carroll came out on top in a girls triangular on the same track.

Bryce Holesinger won three individual events for the Steamers, while Collin Willoughby, one of the additions in the cooperative arrangement with Unity, won two. Rodney Gossard, John Widener and Colby Dykstra also picked up individual wins, and the Fulton/Unity squad won three relays.

The Steamers finished with 117 points. West Carroll took second with 71, followed by Riverdale (47) and Morrison (12).

Fulton/Fulton Unity dominated the field events, winning four of the five events.

Gossard won the triple jump at 37 feet, 3 inches; Holesinger went 20-1 to win the long jump; Widener threw the discus 120-0; and Dykstra tossed the shot put 38-3. The Steamers also got seconds in three of the events.

Holesinger also picked up wins in both hurdle events. He won the 100 hurdles in 15.1 seconds and the 300s in 41.3.

Willoughby picked up his victories in the distance races. He won the 3,200 meters in 11:24 and the 1,600 in 5:07.3.

Jeff Casey was the lone winner for West Carroll. He won the 800 in 2:14.

In the girls meet, the Thunder earned 94 points, while Fulton/Fulton Unity had 48 and Morrison 28.

Lindsay Dauphin won a pair of events for the Thunder, who also got wins from Kaylee Vos, Samantha Case and Samantha Boyer.

Dauphin won the 800 in 2:44.6 and the 1,600 in 6:24.1. Vos went 5-0 to win the high jump. Case won the 3,200 in 15.16.1 and Boyer won the 100 hurdles in 17.2.

Erin Wessels, another Unity athlete, was a triple winner for home team. She claimed first in the triple jump at 34-4 and won the 100-meter dash in 13.0.

Other winners for the Steamers were Autumn Hutton in the shot put (30-3), Kelsey Leffler in the discus (89-2) and Betsy Leonard in the 300 hurdles (54.0).

Morrison got wins from Brandi Hosford in the long jump (14-0.5) and Lakin Goodman in the 400 (1:06.3).

Sabers’ Schoel 17th at Drake

DES MOINES — Sarah Schoel of Central DeWitt was the first area high school athlete to compete at this year’s Drake Relays, and she placed 17th in the long jump Thursday.

Schoel fouled on her first two attempts, then went 16 feet, 2.25 inches.

Jalynn Roberts-Lewis of Des Moines Roosevelt won the competition at 18-10.25.
