Rickertsen, Jacobs top field at Big East

CALAMUS — A pair of birdies on the front nine and steady golf on the back side keyed Calamus-Wheatland’s Austin Rickertsen on Monday as he won medalist honors at the final Big East Conference boys golf meet.

Playing on his home course, Wapsie Oaks, Rickertsen shot an 8-over-par 78 to win the individual title by three strokes over Isaac Sturm of Marquette Catholic and Connor Evers of Prince of Peace. Sturm won the tiebreaker for second-place honors and led the Mohawks to the team title with a 345-stroke total.

Rickertsen had birdie-3s on the fifth and ninth holes but also had five bogeys and one double bogey on the front, where he shot a 40. He was much more consistent on the back nine, making pars on the first five holes and No. 18. He bogeyed Nos. 15-17 to finish with a 38.

Behind Rickertsen, Cal-Wheat placed third in the team standings with a 356 total, one stroke behind Lisbon.

Sturm had just one par on the front, where he shot a 43, but made six of them on the back side as part of a 38. Evers had six pars on the front nine and three on the back, shooting a 40-41.

The course yielded just five birdies. Calamus-Wheatland’s Brenden Williams made one on the par-3 seventh hole, Dalton Harms of Midland had a birdie-3 on No. 2 and Andrew Jacobs of Prince of Peace made a birdie-4 on No. 17.

Craiton Andresen of Preston placed fourth with an 82, making 10 pars, and Alex Timmermann of Marquette rounded out the top five with an 84.

Jacobs wins girls title

PRESTON — Carly Jacobs of Marquette Catholic, the only player on her team, made a birdie and 11 pars in shooting a 6-over-par 78 to win medalist honors Monday at the Big East Conference girls golf tournament at Plum River Golf Course.
