Great day at plate for Morrison's Willis

MORRISON, Ill. — Few stat lines look better: 3-for-3 at the plate, a double, a three-run homer, three runs total and two stolen bases. That’s the kind of day Danny Willis had Monday.

In one way or another, the senior infielder was responsible for all five of the Mustangs’ runs in a shutout victory over Fulton, 5-0.

Not to be outdone, Willis’ teammate Connor Duncan earned the win on seven innings and eight strikeouts. The win brought the Mustangs to 10-4 on the season, 8-2 in TRAC-9 play.

Fulton pitcher Matt Dail took the loss despite six innings and only allowing six hits.

Close call for Panthers

PROPHETSTWON, Ill. — Erie/Prophetstown needed extra innings Monday but remains perfect in conference play after beating Sterling Newman Catholic 6-5 in eight innings.

The Panthers started slow, falling behind 4-1 through five innings. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Kenneth Cole hit a two-run homer to keep the game alive.

EP fell behind again, giving up a late run in the top of the eighth. The Panthers’ Jordan Chandler wound up the walk-off hero, delivering a two-run single to win the game.

Pitcher Ethan Howard earned a no-decision in the victory, tallying eight strikeouts.
