North Cedar blanks Northeast, 28-0

CLINTON — GOOSE LAKE — The Northeast Rebels dropped their season-opening game and Game 1 of Jared Block’s head coaching career at Northeast. Officials called a halt to the game after a lengthy lightning delay.  The visiting North Cedar Knights grabbed the victory by a score of 28-0 after just two quarters of play.

The Rebels had a hard time at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball as the Knights out gained the home team by a 281-40 yardage count.

“We came out flat and they were able to control the line of scrimmage, and usually in football games, when you do that you’re going to be able to do some things,” Block said.

Tevin Stoecker and Will Hasken led the Rebels in rushing with 11 yards each, and Hasken added another 15 yards through the air.  All 15 yards were caught by Jack Murphy.

The Knights got things going half way into the first quarter with a 58-yard drive that was capped off by a 6-yard run on the quarterback keeper by Jayden Johnson. The extra point kick was missed and the score stood at a 6-0 lead for North Cedar.

After a quick three-and-out by the Rebels, the Knights struck again as Derrick Gray scampered in from 5 yards out after a 53-yard drive that took just 1 minute and 41 seconds. Gray added a run for the two-point conversion to increase the lead to 14-0.

Derrick Gray added another score on a 16-yard run with the first play of the second quarter to increase the North Cedar lead to 21-0.

Not long after the second quarter score, the first delay of the game because of lightning in the area at the 9:51 mark pulled the two teams off the field for 53 minutes.

That only delayed the Knights' offense as once the game resumed, so did the visiting team.  Jayden Johnson hit Seth Hamilton on a seven-yard pass play for a touchdown and with the extra point, the Knights pushed their lead to 28-0 with 5:18 to play in the half.

The Rebels were hoping to get back out to start the second half and change the momentum but never got a chance to see the field again as officials announced another weather delay because of lightning.  The game never resumed as it was called an official game at 10:30 p.m.

“Good thing it was a non-district game and we can take some things and learn from it," Block said.  “It almost felt like we played another scrimmage, we’re going to see who we got and make sure we line-up where we’re suppose to be."

The Rebels host Tipton next Friday.

“The film won’t lie and we’ll see who can cut it and who looks good in practice," Block said. "We’re going to have to reevaluate some different positions.”

The Rebels fell to 0-1 on the young season.
