Kaster leads Clinton at Tipton

TIPTON — Clinton got a seventh-place finish from Kim Kaster in the girls race, and its boys team placed eighth Thursday at the Tipton Invitational cross country meet.

The meet originally was scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed because of the excessive heat.

“It was a nice day to have a meet; we finally ran a race without the heat and humidity,” Clinton coach Wes Golden said. “This was also our first scoring meet of the season. This was a nice meet to see where we stack up against some of the eastern Iowa competition.”

Kaster completed the 4,000-meter girls course in 16 minutes, 16.1 seconds, almost two minutes faster than her time in 2012. Griffin Rasche (19:01.6) was the only other varsity runner for the River Queens. She placed 59th.

Sophomore Noah Buikema led the Clinton boys varsity with an 18th-place finish in 18:02, 2:17 better than his time in the meet a year ago. Michael Peters was next across the finish line for the River Kings. He took 27th in 18:13.

“The varsity boys squad was comprised of a lot of young runners,” Golden said. Clinton’s top four finishers were three sophomores and a freshman (Jace Houzenga). “They stepped up, however.”

Golden also was impressed by senior Andre Dunlap, who placed seventh in the JV race.

“He will push for a top-five position on the team,” Golden said.

  • Let the (real) games begin: It's NBA playoff time

Finally, the NBA playoffs are set.

It took the entire season to fill out those brackets.

Overtime thrillers in Memphis and Charlotte, a go-ahead dunk in Oklahoma City to win a game and cap another scoring title for Kevin Durant, plus some good old-fashioned disinterest by Brooklyn ... all that, and more, on the final night of the season was needed before the eight conference-quarterfinal matchups in this season's NBA playoffs could be decided.
