Central swimmers edge River Kings

DAVENPORT — Davenport Central won seven of the 11 events, and that was enough to push the Blue Devils past Clinton 50-44 in boys swimming Thursday night.

The lower-than-usual scores were created because Central’s four-lane pool limits each team to two entries in each race instead of the typical four.

Sophomore Josh Hill stood out for the River Kings. He had a role in three of Clinton’s wins. He won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 54.5 seconds, beating Central’s Jordan Miller by almost 10 seconds. His margin was almost 50 seconds in the 500 freestyle. He won that race in 5:13.65, while runner-up Jesse Trujillo of Central finished in 6:02.45.

Hill also anchored Clinton’s winning entry in the 400 freestyle relay, which finished in 3:37.37, more than five seconds ahead of Central. Nathan Harden led off the relay with a 56.21 split. Bret Determan swam the second leg in 56.51, Trevor Kao followed with a 52.86 clocking in the third leg and Hill swam a 51.79 final leg.

Kao picked up Clinton’s other win, leading the Kings to a 1-2 finish in the 50 freestyle. He won in 23.61 seconds, while Harden was second in 24.84. Harden almost pulled off a double win but was edged by 1/100th of a second in the 100 freestyle, which was won by Central’s Will Trasowech in 55.68.

The River Kings are back in action Tuesday with a meet at Dubuque Hempstead.
