Indians top Queens, 6-0

CAMANCHE — They did it once, so they figured why not do it again?

Camanche beat Clinton for the second time Wednesday evening in high school softball, shutting out the River Queens 6-0 in the rematch on its home field.

“The kids like to compete against Clinton,” Camanche coach Erin Schlotfeldt said. “They get a little more amped up. It was nice to follow up the first win (a 4-2 victory May 24 at Clinton) and get another one.”

Clinton coach Trina Cewe would have liked to see the same enthusiasm from her team for the entire game.

“The kids came pumped up, but after the second inning of hitting, the spark wasn’t there anymore,” she said. “It doesn’t take much to put our fire out. We came out in the first inning and I thought we hit real well.”

Hitting wasn’t and issue for the Queens (0-5). They outhit the Indians 7-5.

“It was just a lack of scoring,” Cewe said. “I was disappointed in our offense. Morgan (Mussmann of Camanche) pitched a good game, but we had runners on and plenty of opportunities.”

The best one came in the top of the fourth inning when Keirstyn Davis led off with one of her three hits and a one-out double by Kayla Altemeier put runners on second and third. But Mussmann retired Halee Vicks and Jenna Stremlow on called third strikes to end the threat.

“Looking at strikes with runners on is a no-no, obviously,” Cewe said.

Mussmann said recording a shutout wasn’t a priority.

“It’s kind of a if it happens it happens,” she said. “We have a solid defense.”

The Indians (3-3) made the most of their hits, too, thanks in part to defensive mistakes by Clinton. Only two of the six runs were earned, and Camanche had just one RBI.
