“I like them being aggressive at the plate — we hit the ball hard — and aggressive on the bases,” Scholtfeldt said. “We take advantage of our speed.”
The Indians broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning. It could have been worse for the River Queens — Davis, Clinton’s shortstop, robbed Kylie Vogel of a leadoff hit with a leaping grab of her line drive — but it also could have been another shutout inning for pitcher Sydney Davis.
Clinton got into trouble after a one-out walk and a two-out single by Sydney Grell. Allie Lefebure hammered a shot to left field, but Hunter Chapman misplayed the ball, allowing Julia Moore and Grell to score on the error.
“I think she was too anxious,” Cewe said. “She knew she had to get to it, and she got to it. One error won’t kill you, but a series of errors will.”
That’s just what happened.
Lefebure advanced to second on the play. Mussmann followed with an infield single that put runners on the corners, and Lefebure scored on an error as courtesy runner Bailey Mensinger stole second base.
Two more errors led to a Camanche run in the fifth inning. Camanche completed its scoring in the sixth when Mussmann singled with one out. Mensinger ran again and moved up twice on a pair of wild pitches before Maddie Parker walked. After fouling off two 3-2 pitches, Jordan Goldbeck hit the ball to short, but Mensinger beat the throw to the plate.
Allyson Whitehead came in to pitch, and Lindsey Grams greeted her with an RBI single to center field to complete the scoring.
“We’re starting to get there — in our groove — with some games under our belts,” Mussmann said after the Indians played for the third day in a row after several rainouts in the first two weeks.
