Bucs 4-0 on the season

Defeat Jefferson 21-6

By Shirley Hatch, Branford News Publisher

The Branford Buccaneer varsity football team traveled to Monticello to play Jefferson County and returned home with possibly the first victory ever over the always strong Jefferson team. The Bucs scored in the first quarter on a 33 yard pass play from junior John Perry to senior Tim Clark to go up 6-0. Kyle Certain made the score 7-0 when he split the uprights on the point after attempt.

It was all defense until the fourth quarter when Certain ran 5 yards for pay dirt, and added the PAT for a 14-0 lead. Clark added the Bucs other points on a 9 yard run, with Certain adding the extra point to give the Bucs 21 points. Jefferson got a score in the final quarter but missed the extra point attempt, and the Bucs came away with a 21-6 win to remain undefeated.

Branford dominated the offense, keeping the ball on the ground for 53 plays, compared to 27 for their opponent. The Bucs rushed the ball 52 times for 171 yards and put the ball in the air twice with one of those resulting in a score for the Bucs.

Jefferson had 34 yards on the ground all night not being able to move the ball on the Bucs strong defensive line.

Clark was the Bucs leading ball carrier with 22 rushes for 85 yards. Trent Thompson carried the ball 7 times for 27 yards. Wade Armstrong and Certain had six touches each. Armstrong for 22 yards on the night and Certain 25. Perry had one carry for 8 yards, while Kyle Hudson rushed the ball two times for 3 yards.

Wade Armstrong and John Perry led the Buccaneer defense with 8 tackles each. Certain had 4; David Bass, Anthony Domato and Billy Peck had 3 each; Daniel Garrett, Willie Clemons, Tim Clark and Trent Thompson had 2 each and D J McWherter and Jay Fraddosio each had one.

Certain and Donato were each credited with a fumble recovery.

Another area score was Lafayette 47 Trenton 12.

The Bucs will host the undefeated St. Francis Wolves this Friday for homecoming at Buccaneer stadium. The team is coached by former BHS teacher and coach Jeff Jenkins. St. Francis has put up a lot of points in all their games this year. Their most recent victim was Mandarin Christian whom they defeated 41-28, amasing a total 454 yards of offense.

It will be homecoming at Buccaneer stadium with the crowning of the 2008-09 Princess at 7 p.m. followed by the game, and at half time the 2008-09 homecoming queen will be crowned.

A homecoming parade is scheduled for 12 noon from the football field through downtown Branford.

It will be an exciting time in the Branford community. Come on out and support the Bucs.
