The Branford Buccaneers failed to lock up the District 2-1A runner-up spot Friday night when they lost 49-10 to the Hillard Flashes. Going into the game the Bucs had high hopes of defeating Hillard, and advancing to the playoffs, as the district runner-up. The Lafayette Hornets are district champs for the fourth time in as many years.
The Bucs jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead but it was all Flashes in the final three quarters.
Senior Wade Armstrong scored the only Buccaneer touchdown on a one yard run. Kyle Certain booted the extra point to put the Bucs ahead 7-0. Later in first quarter sophomore Certain made good a 19 yard field goal, and that was all the scoring for the Bucs on this evening.
The Flashes scored twice in the second quarter to give Hillard a 10-14 half-time advantage. In the third quarter the Flashes ran and passed all over the Bucs putting 28 points on the scoreboard to lead 42-10 as the third quarter ended. A 26 yard pass from Alderman to Bowen in the final period completed the scoring with the Bucs going down in defeat 49-10.
Hillard finished the night with 335 yards of offense, while holding the Bucs to 169.
The Bucs committed three turnovers on four drives in the third period with Hillard successfully turning each into a TD. Coach Bill Wiles said, "we did well in the first quarter but after that we were not able to stop them."
Junior John Perry had an interception for the Bucs. Tackles are as follows:
Kyle Certain 3; Wade Armstrong 8; Logan Lynch 2;Tim Clark 6; John Perry 7 ; David Bass 6; Matt Lambert 1; Spencer White 1; Daniel Garrett 1; Willie Clemons 1.
The Bucs season will end Friday at home when they host Lighthouse Christian. It will be senior night. Thirteen football seniors will be honored, many who have played together since their freshman year.
Come out and support the Bucs and applaud seniors in football, cheerleading and band.
