  • FirstHealth to host Love Light ceremony
    TROY — In early December, for the 22nd time, the FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will sponsor its Christmas Love Light Tree program, an event that marks the beginning of the hospital’s Christmas holiday season.
    Scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the hospital’s main entrance, the 2009 Love Light ceremony will continue a long-standing tradition in the hospital community — in more ways than one.

  • Church’s organ makes its re-debut for fundraiser
    First Presbyterian Church of Oakboro’s original 1916 pump organ found its way home in 2005 after 50 years and it recently made its debut for a fundraising event.
    In 2005, the pedal straps were broken and it has remained silent these last few years.

    On Nov. 5, there was a plea from Michele Bachmann, House representative from Minnesota, to join her on the Capitol steps for a press conference to voice opposition to the proposed Health Care Bill.

  • Senior Center ballroom gets facelift through Lowes hero project
    The ballroom at the Stanly County Senior Center, 283 N. Third St., Albemarle, has a new face lift. The Senior Center was selected as the recipient of the 2009 Lowes Heroes Project Program. More than 20 employees from Lowes volunteered their time and talents to paint the ballroom.

    What do you do with 74 small dogs? Call Stanly County Humane Society (SCHS). At least that is what Animal Control officers did a few weeks ago when a local breeder decided to downsize.
    The major responsibility of Animal Control is public safety. The adoption of animals is a priority but must take second place to keeping the public safe from disease and injury related to animals.

  • Junior Miss Stanly County Pageant winners named
    The Miss Stanly County Pageant Association has announced the winners of the 2010 Junior Miss Stanly County Pageant, a support pageant for the Miss Stanly County Pageant and Miss Stanly County Outstanding Teen Pageant.
    The Agri-Civic Center Stage came alive Oct. 3 as 22 young ladies competed for the Junior Miss Stanly County titles. Age groups included ages from infants through pre-teens.

    Ben Millsap, clinical program manager at Monarch, was honored recently as the recipient of the Professional of the Year from the Arc of North Carolina. He was selected from numerous applicants who work in the human services field from all over North Carolina.
