Palestine News

By Gay Heafner

Thursday, November 5, 2009 At the 9:45 a.m. worship hour on Nov. 1, All Saints’ Day was observed. On behalf of the UMW Robin Cagle and Lorene Bost presented an impressive service of remembrance to honor the memories of S.A. Faulkner, Vernie Lowder and Hugh Smith.

During the Kids’ Time, Robin Mauldin introduced our children to the Operation Christmas Child Project. A short video was shown concerning the specifics of this project.

The title of Rev. David Nolan’s sermon was “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our . . .” He read scripture from Matthew 7 :15-20.

Upcoming Events

Nov. 5 — The UMW will meet at 7 p.m. at the church hut.

Nov. 7 — Bethany VFD will hold a barbecue fund raiser from 11 a.m.-until. Everyone in the community is asked to donate desserts. They should be taken to the firehouse Nov. 6.

Everyone is encouraged to participate in this benefit because our volunteer firefighters provide an excellent service to all of us.

A family benefit in honor of Dianne Beachum and Rick Cooper, and in memory of Patsy Johnson will be held at Gold Hill Historic Park Barn. There will be motorcycle rides from 1-4 p.m. with a barbecue dinner and bluegrass music from 4-7 p.m. The cost is $10 for the motorcycle rides and $10 for the barbecue dinner and bluegrass event.

Nov. 8 — The UMW will sponsor a soup luncheon at the church hut. The cost is a donation.

Nov. 15 — The annual Peggy Bell blood drive will be held from 1-5:30 p.m.

The evening “Second Shift” series will hold a special celebration for the Cameron Newell Benefit. Everyone is encouraged to attend this benefit for an extra special six-year-old boy.

Special Recognition

Caleb Howell, son of Lynn and Annette Howell, is currently at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, receiving special training.

Caleb is the grandson of Jerry and Joyce Hatley and the great-grandson of the late Arthur and Olee Hatley of our community.

We wish Caleb well and our prayers go with him as he joins the ranks of those who serve our country.

Congratulations are ex-tended to Kaleb Medlin for earning the coveted Eagle Scout Award.

Kaleb is the son of Kip and Linda Medlin and the grandson of Evey and Jane Medlin. His great-grandparents were the late Evelyn Medlin, and Bob and Donna Forte. We congratulate him on this special honor and all his fine accomplishments.

It’s ironic that we honor two young men with the same given name — spelled differently.

Upcoming Events

Nov. 22 — The Community Thanksgiving Service will be held. The time and location will be announced in the coming weeks.

Nov. 22 — Charge Conference will be held at 7 p.m. at Bethel.
