  • Pfeiffer spreads awareness about homelessness through week of activities
    Homelessness and hunger in the United States is often referred to as a “revolving-door” crisis. Many escape the dire situation quickly, but many more become homeless every day.
    Currently, an estimated 3.5 million homeless persons, including 1.35 million children, live in the U.S., and the number is increasing, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless.

  • Pfeiffer leader during 1970s dies
    Dr. Douglas R. Sasser, who served as president of then Pfeiffer College from 1971-78, has died at 79 in Lychburg, Va.
    Two separate memorial services have been scheduled. The first will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 13 at the Centenary UMC in Lynchburg, Va., and the second is at 11 a.m. Nov. 18 at Millen UMC in Millen, Ga.

  • County elementary teachers introduced to new Ag in the Classroom teaching kit
    A special educational training event was held for elementary educators from Stanly County Schools on October 30. At the session, sponsored by the Stanly County Farm Bureau educators representing elementary schools from the county school system took part in an orientation related to the use of a new teaching kit entitled “The Farmer Grows a Rainbow.” The kit includes multiple classroom lessons and accompanying physical activities for Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grades that address nutrition and fitness education along with core curricula.

  • Michael A. Demayo scholarship to offer $2,500 to qualifiying high school seniors
    For the eighth consecutive year, the Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship program is pleased to offer high school seniors an opportunity to win a $2,500 scholarship toward their college education. Students will be judged on a number of criteria including the submission of a presentation (video, PowerPoint, website, brochure or speech) on the prevention of underage drinking and driving.

  • New masters program to be offered at Pfeiffer University
    The need for special education teachers is expected to increase by 15 percent through 2016.
    Although student enrollment in general is expected to grow slowly, continued increases in the number of students with learning disabilities who require services will generate a greater demand for special education teachers, according to a statistics report released by the U.S. Department of Labor.

    Homecoming at Pfeiffer University was different this year.
    First, it was really wet; this is the second year in a row we experienced a soggy Homecoming. Despite the weather there was a great turnout of alumni and a great showing by all of our student-athletes. Men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse as well as our women’s volleyball team all won their respective matches. The other major difference, at least for me, was celebrating Homecoming as a full-time University staff member for the very first time.

    Gray Stone Day School held its fifth annual National Honor Society induction Oct. 13 in The Henry Pfeiffer Chapel on the campus of Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer.
    Parents of the inductees and the entire faculty and student body of Gray Stone Day School were in attendance.
