Horn in the West hosts ‘Stanly County Nights’

Sunday, July 12, 2009 Stanly County has its opportunity coming soon to witness the exciting drama of “Horn in the West,” the nation’s oldest Outdoor Revolutionary War drama.

The play is offering special “county nights” to North Carolina counties at discounted ticket prices. Stanly County residents can purchase tickets at $8 each with valid I.D. for shows of July 17-19.

Every year as the summer sun shines down on the Blue Ridge Mountains, the sounds of cannon fire, hails of muskets, songs of joy and songs of sorrow, along with Native chants and cries of times past fill the air.

“Horn in the West” is celebrating its 58th consecutive season this summer.

This theater drama follows a band of settlers led by the Daniel Boone and the British Dr. Geoffrey Stuart as they head west towards dreams of a new life during the turmoil of the Revolutionary War. British aristocrats, brave mountain men and Native Americans fill the stage to give the audience a one-of-a-kind experience that will not be soon forgotten at the historic Daniel Boone Amphitheater.

Before the show, visitors can tour around the Hickory Ridge Homestead, the Horn’s own living history museum. The site includes authentic 18th century log cabins with period furnishings and artifacts, as well as re-enactors who spin yarn, blacksmith, weave cloth and make corn-husk dolls. See the smoke house and the blacksmith's shop, the 18th century working full-sized loom and rustic wooden pig pen.

Horn in the West also offers “Dinners with Daniel” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, an all-you-can-eat buffet style dinner catered by The Daniel Boone Inn. Enjoy home-style cooking under shady oak trees and watch the wildlife play among one of the greenest areas in Watauga County.

The show opened in mid-June and will run through Aug. 15. Shows are Tuesday-Sunday at 8 p.m. and Dinners with Daniel begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Hickory Ridge Home-stead is open from 5 p.m. until the show begins and visitors should allow at least 20-30 minutes for touring the museum. The gift shop is set up in the Frasier cabin, part of the Homestead, and carries animal finger puppets, T-shirts, old-fashioned children’s toys, books and other memorabilia. And of course, a good old American concession stand with hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, cotton candy and all the candy bars you can eat.

The Horn has some new attractions to add to the show this year, including a brand new sound system that has dramatically improved hearing quality and makes the audience feel even more in the middle of the action. There are also golf cars available to help audience members who need assistance getting to their seats.

Interested individuals, families and tour groups can order their tickets for the Horn in the West show and the Dan’l Boone Dinners online at www.horninthe west.com or by calling the Horn in the West office at (828) 264-2120.

Current 2009 season prices are $18 for adults and $9 for children. Dinners with Daniel are $13 for adults and $8 for children. Check with your hotel accommodation or call Horn in the West for other possible discounts.
