We can no afford a complacent America

Sunday, November 1, 2009 Starting with Tuesday’s election, I urge every American to stand up and be heard by casting his/her vote. It is apparent from the low voter turnout that Americans have become complacent in the election process.

We can no longer live our everyday lives and assume the officials who are elected will make the best decisions for America. All of our elections are significant, from our local City Council, to the halls of Congress.

When Ben Franklin came out of the Constitutional Hall a woman asked him, “Sir, what type of government have you given us?” His immediate response was, “A Republic ma’am, if you can keep it.” We risk losing our Republic as we know it, if this trend of complacency continues.

The right to vote is the instrument our founding fathers gave us to be heard. It is not about casting a vote for the sake of voting or checking to see which candidate has a (D) or a (R) by their name. We must educate ourselves on the candidates that are running and vote for those who share our morals and values. The candidates we elect must have common sense and the utmost regard for our Constitution.

I would seriously doubt anyone reading this newspaper would write a large check with the expectation of having their child and/or grandchild cover the debt at a future date.

Yet, we continue to elect politicians who are spending our children’s future. Lately, no matter which party wins the majority, the results have been more spending, bigger government and larger deficits.

This is occurring in all levels of government. Even locally, we have seen some elected officials spend over a million tax dollars trying to seize private property from a local corporation. At the Federal level, the government has taken over controlling interest of some of America’s largest companies.

I urge you to make a difference with your vote and stop out of control government while we still can.

We the people need to put our complacency aside and become engaged in the election process. If we do not take action and vote, we will have a government we do not agree with, but we will have the government we deserve.
