Thank you for helping the children

On Dec. 25, in the impoverished communities where coal mining is still the chief livelihood around the Red Bird Mission Kentucky there will be children riding on bicycles and tricycles who never imagined the freedom having “your own wheels” can make. Can you see the bumps and bruises and the snickers and giggles involved in this process? Those who didn’t get a bicycle this year may get one next year so get ready for the local beggar to show up at your door.

Nov. 11, 2009 is Veterans Day — a day set aside to honor veterans of the U.S. armed forces and those killed in battle. The day gives our great nation an opportunity to show appreciation to all veterans for their service, to acknowledge their sacrifice and to remember the price of the freedom we enjoy.

Country in need of our help

Our country needs our help in this time of unemployment. I believe in “Waste not, want not.” When I see leaves on the side of the road, I see God’s riches. When I see the sun shine and the rain fall, I see God’s riches and we are blessed. We just need the knowledge to utilize these things to their greatest potential.

I found the right doctor

In April 2009, I went to the ER at Stanly Regional Hospital. I thought it might be my gallbladder. But all the tests that were made did not show that it was my gallbladder. They wanted me to see a surgeon and after he looked at my tests and examined me, he thought it was an ulcer. He recommended that I go see Dr. Reddy, which I did, and Dr. Reddy set up a time for me to have an endoscopy and colonoscopy.

Norwood resident makes his pitch for Albemarle council candidate

On Nov. 3, the residents of Albemarle will have the opportunity to vote for an at-large position on the Albemarle City Council. I regret, as a non-resident of the city of Albemarle that I cannot vote, but I urge all those that can, cast your vote for Dorian Creeden, or better known as “D.C.” to many.

We can no afford a complacent America

Starting with Tuesday’s election, I urge every American to stand up and be heard by casting his/her vote. It is apparent from the low voter turnout that Americans have become complacent in the election process.

French historian Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, “In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve.”Our Founding Fathers gave The United States of America a republic. A system of government constrained by the mandates of our constitution. We are governed by laws enacted by men and women who are elected by the people.

Everyone should take the day to remember

If we can give our schools teacher workdays, mundane holidays and tweak the school calendar, then we should take the time to include Armistice Day or the newer holiday term Veteran’s Day as a day when all children come to see the parades and memorial events of the honoring of those who gave their lives, were wounded or were proud to serve their country.

Many, many years ago, a ragtag army from 13 floundering colonies went to war against the mightiest nation in the world. Men gave their lives for freedom and their blood saturated the ground.
