  • Congressman Kissell to vote no on House health care bill
    Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) announced that he plans to vote against the most recent health care bill offered in the U.S. House of Representatives due to that bill’s proposed cuts in Medicare benefits.

  • Gaddy, Akin, Baucom retain seats on New London council
    Calvin Gaddy, Charles Akin and Carolyn B. Baucom retained their seats with the New London town council.

  • New East District rep elected, 2 incumbents elected to Badin council
    Anne Kelley Harwood is the new east district representative for the Badin town council, according to the results from Tuesday’s election.

  • Hahn, Jordan, Brattain re-elected to Red Cross town council
    Heath Hahn, Jerry Jordan and Kelly Brattain were all re-elected to the Red Cross Town Council Tuesday. Brattain is filling an unexpired term ending in 2011, while Hahn and Jordan’s seats were each up for re-election. None of the three candidates had any opposition for their seats.

  • Edquist, Herron, Riemann, Bolton to return to Misenheimer board
    Peter D. Edquist, Michael Herron and J. Michael Riemann will continue to serve on the town council for the village of Misenheimer, according to the results of Tuesday’s election.

  • 2 newcomers, 3 incumbents elected to Stanfield board
    Stanfield Town Council will be adding some new faces with the election of Aaron Helms and Greg Lucas. Also returning to the council will be incumbents Larry Sides, Jason Smith and Jerry Williams.

  • Pfeiffer University Concert Choir, Stanly Chorale to perform Handel’s ‘Messiah’
    The Pfeiffer University Concert Choir and The Stanly County Chorale will present the ever-popular Christmas portion of George F. Handel’s “Mes-siah Part I” at 4 p.m. Nov. 22 in the Henry Pfeiffer Chapel on Pfeiffer’s Misenheimer campus. The event is free and open to the public.

  • Oakboro Incumbents retain seats
    Council members Ernest Broadway, Ted Parker and Georgia Harvey will each be serving on the Oakboro Town Council for four years while Roy Helms and Terry Whitley will each serve two years. Helms and Whitley will both be eligible for re-election in 2011, at which time their positions will become four-year terms.

  • Legion Auxiliary receives award
    Albemarle American Legion Auxiliary Unit 520 has been awarded by the Department of the N.C. American Legion Auxiliary in Raleigh to be part of the Plus 1 Club.
    The award was given to Albemarle Auxiliary Presi-dent Dianne Morgan by the Division IV President Janice MacLeod and Wanda Moore, department vice president and membership chairman, when she attended the Division IV meeting held Sept. 12 in Faith.

  • Organizers report a successful Fall Festival
    Downtown Albemarle was alive with children and parents who participated in the 4th Annual Fall Festival and Costume Parade on Oct. 29. This event, sponsored for three of the past four years by Frank Sparger, owner and manager of Sparger Investments, continues to grow in popularity each year.

  • North Stanly Players to have alumni event, present plays Sunday
    The North Stanly Comet Players are 25 years old, and The North Stanly Faculty Players are 20 years old.
    To celebrate these milestones, Director Kerri Huffman, who founded The Comet Players and Faculty Players, is hosting an Alumni Reunion Nov. 8 at The North Stanly Auditorium.

  • Dedication ceremonies coming up
    Stanly County Schools has reached a proud moment with the completion of two major renovation and expansion projects. The projects at Aquadale and Locust elementary schools were completed on schedule and within budget in time for this year’s school opening

  • Familiar faces return to Locust council, Efird elected mayor
    Councilman David Walker was re-elected to the Locust City Council, as was Wilson Barbee and Joe Bishop, who both served on the council in the past.

  • Richfield's Misenheimer wins big over Wilson
    James “Jim” Misenheimer will be the new mayor of Richfield, according to the results from Tuesday’s election.

  • Norwood's Beeker defeats 3 for Mayor
    With 55.20 percent (239 of the 433 votes cast), Harry M. Beeker will be the new mayor of Norwood.
