Nonprofits benefit us all

Sunday, November 1, 2009 Nov. 1 kicks off Nonprofit Awareness Month all across North Carolina.

Despite the United Way's recent debacle in Mecklenburg County, our communities are far better places to live because of the work these groups do.

Our front page today shares information on a holiday fashion show which will help the local American Red Cross rebuild its depleted Disaster Relief Fund, which is most often used to help families who are victims of home fires. Despite the fund being in the red when fires stuck the last time, Red Cross Director Jean Hendley saw that this family in need was not left without by pulling funds from the general fund.

This fashion-show event will be held at Pontiac Pointe on Thursday, Nov. 5 and will feature over 50 local ladies who are giving of their time to model clothing and help raise much needed funds. It’ll be a fun evening for everyone with all proceeds going to be used as a lifeline for families in desperate situations.

This disaster relief is just one example of nonprofits at work here in Stanly County. There are beaucoup more, serving a myriad of needs all across this county … and given today’s economy, the needs are at a peak.

Not only do nonprofits assist those in need, but they all provide more than 400,000 jobs statewide, or almost 10 percent of all jobs in North Carolina. In total, there are more than 10,000 charitable nonprofits statewide that have greater than $25,000 annual revenues.

Truly, Stanly County and all of North Carolina are far better places because of the men and women who give their time to serve others through these groups.

For all that you do, we salute you.
