Knights, ‘Dogs move on; Colts lose to Wolves

Soccer Playoffs

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Thursday, November 5, 2009 The state soccer playoffs opened on Wednesday with two 1A Stanly schools earning wins in the opening round.

Albemarle 3, Highland Tech 1

As a wildcard in the playoffs, the Bulldogs started the 1A playoffs on the road in Gaston County to face the Highland Tech Rams.

Two first-half goals from Shane McConologue lifted the Bulldogs to a 3-1 win over the Rams (5-10).

Both of McConologue’s goals came on free kicks as the Bulldogs (16-4) led 2-0.

Highland Tech would cut the lead in half just before halftime off a header thanks to a cross from the right side.

In the second half, the Bulldogs’ defense stepped up and shutdown the Rams.

George Kartsimaris’s penalty-kick goal in the second half gave Albemarle the two-goal win.

Albemarle, ranked #5 in the NCSCA 1A poll, will travel to Hayesville (12-2-1) on Saturday for a showdown with the Yellow Jackets. The winner of the game will play either #6 Hendersonville or #13 Highlands.

Gray Stone 4, North Moore 2

The Knights faced a familiar opponent in their first-round matchup in the 1A playoffs in fellow Yadkin Valley Conference member North Moore.

Gray Stone would build an early lead and avenge one of their two losses this season with a 4-2 win over the Mustangs, the first playoff victory in school history.

Colin Sullivan opened the scoring in the 18th minute for Gray Stone (16-2) with an assist to Hans Honer.

Charlie Ambrose would give the Knights a 2-0 halftime lead, assisted by Mike Wall.

The Mustangs’ Abraham Won would put North Moore on the board in the 60th minute, with the assist to Luis Peralta, but Gray Stone quickly responded.

Goals by Wall and Honer, with respective assists to Andrew Parks and Ambrose, would give the Knights a 4-1 lead.

Peralta would score an unassisted goal in the 80th minute to round out the scoring.

“That game was just a step in the playoffs. When you play a conference foe in the first round, it doesn’t feel like the playoffs, but we knew going in we had to take care of this one.

Gray Stone hosts Bishop McGuinness this Saturday afternoon at the Albemarle Soccer Complex.

Lincolnton 1, W. Stanly 0

The Colts wrapped up their 2009 season with a 1-0 loss in the first round of the 2A playoffs at Lincolnton.

After a scoreless first half, Lincolnton (13-3)scored with 12 minutes left on a header after a deflection for the lone goal of the game.

“We played an excellent match against a very good team in which we controlled the style of play. We were able to create more opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them and finish,” West Stanly head coach Lee Ennis said.

The Colts finished this season 11-10 overall.

"This team far exceeded my season expectations. This young team will have an opportunity to use this experience to improve for next season,” Ennis said.
