Bulldogs win streak snapped by Rosman

1A Volleyball Western Regionals

By Charles Curcio, Sports Editor

Thursday, November 5, 2009 The Albemarle volleyball team had not faced a team in their 2009 season that was on as big of a win streak as they had been until Tuesday’s regional finals against Rosman.

Entering the match, the Tigers had won 27 matches in a row while the Bulldogs had not been beaten in 25 straight since their first game of the season.

Behind 26 kills from senior Joanna Whitmire, Rosman advanced to their second state finals in school history with a 3-1 win against Albemarle Tuesday night.

Scores of the match were 25-17, 19-25, 22-25 and 15-25.

Mariah Lowder led Albemarle (25-2) with 14 kills and 20 digs, while Gabrielle Lowder added 12 kills and five digs.

Paige McConologue had five kills and 12 digs, and Samantha Braunsberg had 24 assists.

Senior Joanna Whitmire led the Tigers (31-1) with 26 kills while Kara Galloway added 12 kills.

In Game 1, the two teams were tied at 4 when the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-6 lead, powered by kills from Gabrielle Lowder and Erin Freeman.

Albemarle would lead 24-12 but a late Lady Tiger run of six in a row would help build momentum for Rosman into the second game.

The Tigers broke a 4-4 tie in the second set with an 8-0 run and Albemarle would not be able to put together a run as Rosman tied the match..

Game 3 would prove to be a momentum shift in the Tigers' favor. Neither team led by more then three points, battling back and forth to a 17-17 tie.

Emotions ran high in the third set as Rosman’s Maddie Limbo would get a yellow card for taunting after a Tiger kill.

Albemarle would get within one point at 21-20 but a kill from Kara Galloway would give Rosman a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Bulldogs would not give up easily, battling back for a 5-5 tie early in the fourth and final game.

Rosman would score nine of the next 11 points and earn a trip to the 1A finals this Saturday against Eastern Regional champion Pender.

“Rosman was very skilled and their experience showed. At moments in each set, we were still doing things very well. We let them dictate our offense,” Albemarle head coach Joanne McConologue said.

“I think they came in underestimating us. I told our girls that in order to win, we must be in every point mentally and physically. We got worn out mentally and physically.”

The Bulldogs finish the season with the best record in school history, including the Yadkin Valley Conference regular season and tournament championships.

“This is the best year we have ever had. People will come into this gym, see a volleyball sign and know that we exist. My goal is to build a program and build young ladies. It’s about who you are when you step off of the court,” McConologue said.
