Efforts to lift partially sunken towboat continue

Associated Press

The towboat partially submerged in the Mississippi River has been raised about 7 feet and crews are planning to slowly pull it completely out of the water soon.

A group of federal, state, and local agencies coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard have been working to clean up spilled oil and diesel fuel and lift the partially sunken boat from the river since it took on water after hitting something in the river a week ago.

The investigation continues into what caused the accident at LeClaire.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman says all fuel has now been removed from the boat.

Cranes partially lifted the boat Sunday. Tests are planned for today to ensure the boat is safe to lift completely out of the river.
