---- — CLINTON — The public will get its first look at the completed West Heights Townhouse apartment complex Tuesday afternoon.
The Community Housing Initiatives, Inc. project, which broke ground in January, includes 30 units within 32,000 square feet. The mixture of three- and four-bedroom apartments will be offered at rents of $545 to $600, including water, sewer and garbage. CHI Housing representative Matt Miller said there is a current need for affordable housing.
“So this is going to be a nice addition for the city of Clinton,” Miller said.
With the apartments complete, a ribbon cutting will be held by the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the the complex, 1155 14th Ave. Northwest. Tours of the the apartments will be available later that day during an open house between 1 and 3 p.m.
West Heights Townhouse is the fourth project CHI Housing has completed in Clinton. The organization was formed in 1994 to address affordable rental housing needs in rural northwest Iowa. CHI Housing also owns Armstrong Apartments, Clinton Block Apartments and Van Allen Apartments in Clinton.
CHI Housing has worked with other Clinton organizations, such as the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce, the Clinton Regional Development Corp. and the Clinton City Council, to bring this project to fruition. Chamber President Nathan Sondgeroth said this complex will be a nice addition to the community.
“It’s always important to have a wide array of housing choices, as well as job choices and reccreation choices,” Sondgeroth said. “It reinforces the fabric of our community.”
The Iowa Finance Authority Board awarded a federal tax credit of more than $6 million over 10 years and a HOME loan of $390,000 to fund this project. Besides the 30 units, the complex also includes an exercise room, a community room and garages. The project also is completely handicap accessible.
“I think that they're pretty much ready to go," Miller said.
West Heights Townhouse is currently taking applications and tenants will move in within the next few weeks. Miller said there will be some income guidelines for those wanting to live in the complex. CHI will also be renting at least eight units to individuals with physical, mental and developmental disabilities.
