CLINTON — Local bowlers are getting ready for the Clinton City Tournament that starts this weekend at Plaza Bowl.

Action begins Saturday with men’s singles and doubles, followed by women’s singles and doubles Sunday.

The following weekend, the women will play on Saturday, with the men finishing their competition on Sunday, Feb. 3.

Team events are set for each day next week from Monday through Friday.

Bill Tripp and Margot Clark were last year’s all-events winners. Tripp finished with a 2,299-pin total, while Clark totaled 2,243.

Scott Pawski is the defending men’s singles champion. He rolled an 822 series last year, while Joyce Martinez won the women’s singles with a 756 series. Ryan Arey and Keith Schubert won the men’s doubles crown last year with a 1,526, while Clark and Rheanna DiVirgilio were the women’s doubles champions with a 1,466.

Team champions were Darling International for the men with a 3,646 score in the Tuesday Early League and I Don’t Care for the women with a 3,347 total in the Sunday Mixed League.

The Sweet 16 Roll-off for the top scorers in the tournament is set for Saturday, Feb. 9. The men roll at 2 p.m. that day, the women at 4 p.m.

Following the competition that day, there will be a steak fry ($9.99) and dance at the Clinton Moose Lodge. The 6 p.m. event, which will feature Three on a Tree as the band, is open to the public.

While the entry deadline was Jan. 12, Douglas Stouffer, an organizer for the 66th annual men’s event, said some openings have become available that the organizers wouldn’t mind filling.
