Clinton area students earn FBLA honors

CORALVILLE — Students from Clinton and Northeast high schools recently participated in a Future Business Leaders of America conference in Coralville.

Fifteen students from Clinton and nine people from Northeast competed at the state event.

Three members of the Clinton chapter ran successfully for state officer positions. Rohan Aggarwal was voted in as the 2013-2014 Iowa state president, replacing the 2012-2013 president, Vamsi Marla, also from Clinton. Nick Beckwith received the majority of votes to become the next state parlimentarian, and Carson Peck, was voted to be the next state webmaster.

Clinton High School students placing in the top 5 included: Marla, public speaking II, economics, vocabulary relay; John Steger, help desk, hospitality management, vocabulary relay; Cyrus Colah, business law, business calculations, vocabulary relay; Peck, technology concepts, business math, battle of the chapters; Ryan Schroeder, spelling relay, sports management; Paolo Marilim, spelling relay; Tony Hurlburt, spelling relay; Aggarwal, public speaking I, introduction to parlimentary procedure, battle of the chapters; Beckwith, battle of the chapters.

The Northeast chapter was recognized for the Iowa Merit award and received first place in event sponsorship. Individual place winners included: Local Chapter Annual Business Report, by Emily Bray and Madalynn Meier, second; Insurance, by Bray, third; Accounting II by Madalynn Meier, fourth; Spreadsheet Applications by Shelby Bormann, fourth; and Local Chapter Exhibit by Bormann, Emily Eickert and Taylor Sullivan, fifth.

The national conference will be the last week in June in Anaheim, Calif.

Students who placed in the top two or three events may compete at the national level against FBLA members from across the country.

Clinton will have six members who will attend the national conference, while Northeast will have two.

FBLA is a career and technical student organization whose mission is to bring business and education together in a working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs.
