Cardinals 2nd at Rebels' tourney

GOOSE LAKE — Maquoketa, Camanche and Northeast all made it to the semifinals of the Northeast Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday, with Maquoketa advancing to the finals.

Davenport Assumption, the No. 6-ranked team in the Iowa Class 4A coaches poll, beat the Cardinals 25-12, 25-11 for the title.

Allison Vandemore, who led Maquoketa with 49 kills, 10 aces and had a .366 attack percentage, and teammate Aubree Taylor (29 kills, .333 attack percentage, 35 digs) earned all-tournament honors, along with Danielle Cabel and Lexi Flynn of Davenport Assumption.

Also on the all-tournament team were Northeast’s Tierra Hildebrandt, Camanche’s Libby Schnoor, Fulton’s Rachael Beiermann, Prince of Peace’s Shannon Kuehl, Calamus-Wheatland’s McKenna Luepker and Jaclyn Ralfs of Durant-Bennett.

Hildebrandt had eight kills, five aces, 12 digs and one assist for the Rebels (10-13). Beiermann finished with 12 kills, 22 assists, two blocks and two aces for Fulton (5-14). Kuehl led Prince of Peace with eighth assists. Luepker wound up with five kills, 13 digs, two blocks and six aces, leading Calamus-Wheatland (10-12) in all of those categories except kills.

Maquoketa (8-16) went 3-0 in Pool 2, winning a three-set match with Northeast (10-13) to determine the pool champion. Camanche won a tiebreaker after the Indians, Fulton and Durant-Bennett each went 1-2 in pool play. The Indians did manage to take Assumption to three sets, though, winning the second game 25-23.

Maquoketa and Camanche had a tight battle in the semifinals, with the Cardinals winning a pair of two-point games, 26-24 and 25-23. Assumption beat Northeast 25-14, 25-10 in the other semifinal.

“I was very pleased with our performance today,” Northeast coach Brenda McKone said. “We had consistent play regardless of the opponent. We pushed Maquoketa to three and had our chances to win. Assumption is a very talented team and deserved the tourney championship.”

GALENA, Ill. — Unity Christian defeated Quad Cities Christian in the semifinals, taking the deciding third set by two points, but fell 25-10, 25-10 to Faith Christian of Dixon in the championship match of the Northern Illinois Christian Conference.
